Gokaldas targets home turf

Bangalore, March 20

Garment manufacturer Gokaldas Exports is in talks with Reliance Retail, Bharti and the Aditya Birla group for supply of garments. It is also talking to an international lingerie brand for a joint venture. The company has opened up a separate domestic supply cell to handle enquiries from domestic retailers. Gokaldas Exports already supplies to the domestic outlets of Nike, Adidas and Reebok, apart from department stores such as Shoppers' Stop and Pantaloon.

Four factories are being set up — in Chennai, Tumkur, Mysore and Hyderabad — which are expected to become operational soon. These will take its total tally to 50 factories. According to Mr Rajendra Hinduja, Director, Gokaldas Exports, four-five of these 50 plants will be dedicated for domestic supply. Currently, 95 per cent of its turnover (Rs 1,000 crore) comes from exports, with margins of 12-13 per cent. Mr Hinduja hopes that in two years, revenues from domestic retail supply will touch Rs 200 crore (from Rs 50 crore now), with margins of 15 per cent. "The domestic market is opening up and we want to send out signals that we have the capacity to cater to the needs of domestic retailers too," said Mr Hinduja.
