Hyderabad all set for film fest from Friday

K.V. Kurmanath

Telugu film industry offers full support

The idea behind extending support to the festival is to expose young filmmakers and filmgoers to the best of films from around the world.

Hyderabad March 20 The screening of Yatra, a film directed by Gautham Ghosh, at Telugu Lalithakalathoranam on Friday would kick off the first Hyderabad International Film Festival (HIFF), which is set to go on till March 29.

To be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the festival would feature 80 films, including 30 short and documentary films.

The AP Film Directors' Association has come forward to associate itself with the festival.

The industry, however, is not ambitious. Mr Tammareddy Bharadwaja, veteran producer, said that the event was not aimed at putting up a show of strength of the Telugu film industry. "We will be there throughout. But our intention is not to make it a pompous event," he said.

"The idea behind extending support to the festival is to expose young filmmakers and filmgoers to the best of films from around the world. The exposure would go a long way in promoting quality filmmaking," he told Business Line.

"We are conducting a short film competition to encourage the new generation of directors to make good movies. If they could make good short films, they could later on graduate to the larger format," he added.

About 800 people, including artistes, directors, writers and producers, have already registered.

The festival line-up includes 10 films from France, 30 from Iran and seven from South Africa.

While the `World Classics' section would have 10 films, the Indian section would have 17 films from different languages.

Seven cinemas, including two at the Prasads multiplex, would screen the films.
