Madurai station to be modernised

Our Correspondent

Madurai, March 21

World-class passenger amenities under a multi-crore project have been sanctioned for railway passengers in Madurai. Two centrally air-conditioned buildings — a 24,000-sq.ft. three-storey building and a 45,000-sq. ft. seven-storey building — have been envisaged under the project. While the former will be owned and managed by the Railways, the latter under public-private partnership will have a shopping mall. The Department of Architecture of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, project consultant, will design the buildings. According to the Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Mr S. Suyambulingam, the construction work would commence by June first week and completed within a time frame. The facilities proposed include e-ticketing/i-ticketing kiosks, lobby for foreign tourists, retiring rooms and waiting halls, roof-top restaurants, banks/ATMs, tour operators' lounge, conference hall, pilgrim centre, `Wi-fi' Internet centre etc. Escalators, ramps and emergency stairs are also included in the project. The building will be coming up near the eastern entry of the railway station, he added.
