Spices export crosses Rs 3,000 cr

Registers 6% rise in quantity, 44% in value

Kochi March 21 For the first time exports of spices have crossed Rs 3,000 crore during April - February 2006-07 and surpassed the target both in volume and value set for the current fiscal.

Total exports have been estimated at 3.11 lakh tonnes valued at Rs 3,020 crore as against 2.92 lakh tonnes worth Rs 2,100.40 crore during April-February of the previous fiscal. Thus, the shipments have shown in increase of six per cent in quantity and 44 per cent in value. In dollar terms, the increase was 40 per cent.

Spices oils and oleoresins and mint products contributed 46 per cent of the total export earnings. Chilli contributed 20 per cent, followed by pepper (9 per cent) and turmeric (5 per cent).

During the current fiscal up to February, exports of pepper, cardamom (large), chilli, turmeric, cumin, nutmeg and mace, vanilla, curry-powder/paste, mint products, other seed spices and other spices such as tamarind, asafoetida etc have shown an increase both in quantity and value.

Against the export target of 3.06 lakh tonnes valued at Rs 2,500 crore for the current fiscal, the achievement of 3.11 lakh tonnes valued at Rs 3,020 crore up to February 2007 is 102 per cent in quantity, 121 per cent in rupee value and 122 per cent in dollars, it said.

In the case of coriander, fennel and fenugreek there is an increase in value only. All other spices have shown decline in both value and quantity, an official press release here said.

Shipments of pepper, cardamom (large), chilli, turmeric, coriander, cumin, nutmeg and mace, vanilla and mint products have achieved the target in terms of quantity and value while other spices such as tamarind, asafoetida etc have achieved the target in terms of value only.
