Year's lowest offer at Coonoor tea sale

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor March 21 A volume of 5.44 lakh kg has been catalogued for the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) to be held here on Thursday and Friday. This is the lowest volume so far for the year. It is 80,000 kg lower than the offer of last week.

The volume is low because of the frost eating into more than 1,000 hectares of tea fields in the Nilgiris. Besides, the continuous dry weather has reduced the harvest in many estates. Factories complain that they are working only for three days a week because of inadequate supply of green leaf from the fields.

Of the 5.44 lakh kg on offer, as much as 3.83 lakh kg belong to leaf grades and 1.61 lakh kg dust grades. Again, as much as 4.90 lakh kg belong to CTC variety and only 0.54 lakh kg orthodox variety.
