Opinion - Letters
Empowered villages

PURA may be the right route of "Making cities of villages" (Business Line, March 19). But it is not only about the roads and access to the villages. Other things are to be created alongside. Perhaps it could be done by restructuring the eight flagship schemes of the UPA Government from Bharat Nirman to NREGS and by redesigning SEZs to suit villages.

Of course, if villages grow like this the slum growth in cities may automatically stop. It is not enough that we walk on tiled footpaths along the roads in towns and cities; the earth of our villages, that nourishes us, needs to be enriched.

A. Jacob Sahayam
