MR B. SATHYASEELAN, Vice-President - Human Resources, Royal Sundaram Life Insurance

Chennai March 22 Employers want people with competence. The basic elements of competence are managing self and managing work. One must have self-control and self-confidence. He/she must be result oriented and must possess ability to solve problems. One must also be capable of influencing others and promote teamwork, Mr B. Sathyaseelan, Vice-President (HR), Royal Sundaram Life Insurance, told the students of St. Mary's School of Management and Computer Applications in a lecture organised by the Business Line Club.

"Competence at job is a function of knowledge, skill and attitude. While knowledge means understanding of a subject and skill refers to capacity, technique or ability to do something well, attitude is the disposition or state of mind," he said.

Talking about work, he said work is not just something that one does for getting something in return.

Work is also about giving meaning to one's life. Like life, work is also full of constraints. Therefore, the ability of a good manager lies in managing these constraints for achieving the end-result and to create meaning out of it.

"Companies hire you, not for your educational qualification, but only for your attitude and then train you for the skills that are required to perform the job. Therefore, the mute question is — How do I end up with the right attitude?"

One must have clarity of values. Must know what is most valuable to his life, something that one will never trade off. "Build high energy level as without the physical vitality, nothing can be accomplished," Mr Sathyaseelan said.

Emphasising the need for developing bonding power, he said, "We must realise that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others and learn the art of strategising the game plan of your life. The road map you will use to accomplish your goals, ambitions and desires."
