Under the scanner It is learnt from CBI sources that the report of the central investigation agency has expressed demur about the conduct and attitude of the District Police Authority.
Kolkata March 22 The report of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with regard to police action in Nandigram, West Bengal, which left 14 people dead, has revealed that there was no necessity for opening fire on the villagers, as they were not in an aggressive mood. The report was submitted to the Calcutta High Court today. In terms of the order of the High Court, passed by a Division Bench of Chief Justice Mr S.S. Nijjar and Mr Justice P.C. Ghose on a public interest litigation, a team of CBI officials visited Nandigram on March 16, 17 and 18 to examine the gravity of the issue. Today counsel for CBI submitted the report before the court. The court directed that the matter will be heard on March 26. An extension of two days was granted to the State Government to file affidavit regarding revelation of who ordered for firing on 13th and under what circumstances that was ordered for. It is learnt from CBI sources that the report of the central investigation agency has expressed demur about the conduct and attitude of the District Police Authority. Sources said the report also mentions that the CBI team during course of investigation found some local people with arms and ammunition, and the agency came to know from queries that those people were brought in by a political party to reinstate some of their co-supporters who were alleged to have been driven out from Nandigram. The report also mentions that the number of the dead and injured was not tallying with the number of left-over shells fired. The CBI report also mentions that no policeman was wounded by bullets, though some were wounded by the brickbats thrown by the agitators. The court has directed the State Government to state through an affidavit the correctness of allegation of parallel CID inquiry by the Government regarding Nandigram firing.
