New Delhi March 22 Air carrier Indian on Thursday entered in to a joint venture with Jupiter Aviation and Logistics to set up Airframe MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) facility, the first in the country.

European EADS, which recently signed an MoU with Jupiter Aviation to collaborate in aviation ventures, will help the joint venture find a third partner who will carry out the maintenance and repair work.

The facility, which will be set up with an investment of up to Rs 300 crore, will cater to around 300 aircrafts per annum. "We are initially looking at setting up the facility in one of three cities — Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad," said Mr Vishwapati Trivedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Indian.

However, the engine repair facility will be set in Delhi.

As per the agreement, the yet-to-be named joint venture will undertake airframe maintenance and repair of Airbus aircraft of Indian to begin with. Later, it will extend the facility of Airbus aircraft of other airlines and also to aircraft other than the Airbus family.

The facility would be ready in the next 1-2 years and will also cater to markets of Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

"The equity arrangement is yet to be worked out but we are looking at 25 per cent each to be held by Indian and Jupiter and the rest by the third network partner," said Mr Trivedi. All these modalities will be laid out in a business plan that is being readied, he added.

Indian is a major operator of Airbus aircraft and is about to induct 42 new Airbus A320 family aircraft in to its fleet.
