People Singhania is new IIM-A Chairman Our Bureau
Ahmedabad March 24 The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development has appointed Mr Vijaypat Singhania, Chairman-Emeritus of Raymond Ltd, as the new Chairman of the Society and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IIM-A, for a period of five years. He succeeds Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor of Infosys Technologies, whose five-year term ended on March 10. Mr Singhania was a member of the Board of Governors of the IIM-A during 1994-99, an institute spokesman said. The appointment was announced in New Delhi on Friday evening. He is likely to take charge next week and preside over the 42nd Annual Convocation scheduled for March 31. The Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, as chief guest, will deliver the Convocation Address, the spokesman said. Besides being an eminent industrialist, Mr Singhania has been a well-known aviator and holds the world record for the highest altitude gained by travelling in a hot air balloon at the age of 67 in November 2005 when he touched the very edge of the space. Originally, he had planned to break the world record of 64,997 feet held by the British-based Mr Swede Per Lindstrand, and go up to 70,000 feet but he stopped short at 69,852 feet where the earth's atmosphere ends and zero gravity begins. He has won numerous awards during his long, chequered career as an industrialist-adventurist.
