Manjunath of IOC remembered

Our Bureau

Bangalore March 24 It was a poignant morning at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, on Saturday as two extraordinary Indians, Manjunath Shanmugam and Satyendra Dubey were remembered for their commitment to truth and civilian bravery while on duty. "The cause for which these two young people sacrificed their lives is not lost," said Mr Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor, Infosys, while giving away the first Manjunath Shanmugam Integrity Award instituted by the Manjunath Shanmugam Trust, an organisation formed by members of the IIM alumni network.

Incidentally, all eight accused in the Manjunath Shanmugam case were adjudged guilty of murder by a Sessions Court in Lakhimpur Khiri on Friday.

Manjunath, an employee of IOC, was murdered in November 2005 during his efforts to curb oil adulteration. Satyendra Dubey was killed when he attempted to expose `irregularities' in the construction mafia, while working on the Golden Quadrilateral project.

Commending the work done by the IIM alumni in fighting Manjunath's case, Mr Murthy said that while "it's sad that there is no representative of the Indian Oil Corporation present at the function, it's heartening to note that there are a bunch of youngsters who have their ideals intact. The sacrifice that these two citizens made will now be worth it."

The award, instituted to honour and encourage person/s working to uphold truth and honesty in public life, was given to Prof R.P. Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Lucknow University, for fighting the criminalisation of Lucknow University by local politicians. Prof Singh has implemented the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations with regard to student elections in the university.

The Manjunath Shanmugam Trust has also launched the RTI helpline (0-9250-400-100) where agents are trained to handle calls about the RTI Act, how the Act can help resolve specific issues, details of Information Officers in various departments and contact details of RTI activists across the country. The city-based MphasiS, an EDS company, will operate the call centre soon, said a spokesperson for the Trust.
