Shipping Industry & Economy - Coal Pakistan plans coal port Our Bureau
Coal ports, it appears, are the flavour of the season in the sub-continent. Close on the heels of the report that the Tamil Nadu Government has signed an agreement with an Ireland-based company to set up a 2000-MW power plant and a coal-handing port at Nagapattinam, mainly to handle imported coal to meet the requirement of the power plant, comes the report that the Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation has been asked by Islamabad to have a feasibility report prepared on the prospect of launching a coal port. The objective of the feasibility study will be to ascertain the coal requirement not only of power plants but also other industries such as cement and steel over the next 15years. Based on the projected requirement of imported coal by various industries, the size and capacity of the port will be worked out. The study, it is learnt, will also examine the probable water depth at the location to be identified as most suitable and the scope of developing infrastructure, including connectivity to the outside transport network.
