Higher egg absorption means poultry farmers can see some stability in the farm-gate price for eggs, hovering at Rs 1.80-1.85 per piece for over a month

Coimbatore March 25 The Tamil Nadu State Budget announcement on increasing the number of eggs in the noon-meal scheme has received laurels from the national egg coordination committee (NECC) which said the move would boost the literacy drive and help improve the nutrition standards of growing children.

The 2007-08 Budget proposal from the State Government, tabled in the Assembly on Friday, has hiked the overall outlay for the noon-meal scheme with a provision to increase the distribution of eggs to students covered under the mid-day meal programme from the present two eggs to three eggs a week. The State is expected to spend an additional Rs 56 crore or so annually for the increase in egg supply.

Thanking the Tamil Nadu chief minister for his gesture in increasing the number of eggs, the Chairperson of the NECC, Ms Aruradha Desai, in a statement said that eggs carried all essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins needed for health.
