Bengal saree expo in the Capital

Our Bureau

New Delhi March 25 For the imminent humid weather in the Capital after the onset of summer, cotton sarees can provide comfort. Women can now look for options to suit their aesthetics at the two-week long Special Handloom Expo of Bengal Sarees, that is showcasing exclusive products of Bengal Handloom, here.

Jointly organised by the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles under the Cottage & Small Scale Industries (C&SSI) Department, the Government of West Bengal with the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles on Sunday, the Special Expo has brought weavers of the districts of Burdwan, Hooghly and Nadia of Bengal to a new urban market in a bid to provide them with experience.

The cotton sarees from these places are celebrated under diverse names such as Shantipuri, Tangail and Dhaniakhali and have emerged as a favourite attire among women during summer.

The exhibitors of these saree collections say the weavers of Dhanialkahi and Begumpur have brought fabrics woven in off-white with contrasting coloured borders, and also in stripes and checks, while the "Tangail" weavers have brought fine sarees with narrow patterned borders and sarees in the Jamdani range. The Tussars (silk) of Purulia and Murshidabad would also be on display.
