Rise in new arecanut arrivals

Our Correspondent

Kottayam, March 26

Arrivals of new arecanut have increased considerably following good demand from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi where it is mainly used for chewing purposes under different brand names. Some brands are sold adding colour. Different brands have different tastes and colour depending upon the inputs used in processing. Old arecanut has almost disappeared from the market as there are no transactions at the main marketing centres, said a spokesman of the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative (Campco), Thrissur. The market for this variety has become inactive. The price of new arecanut has improved as it touched Rs 73-76 a kg and it might go up if the demand persists at the current levels, sources said.
