Rejuvenating the farm sector

The article `Farm sector needs specific approach' (Business Line, March 27) makes interesting reading.

The author has clearly described the present status of the farm sector and spelt out the steps required to increase the productivity of this sector, which has been languishing for want of government attention for many years.

It is unfortunate that this sector, which can play an important role in alleviating rural poverty in a big way, should be receiving step-motherly treatment from the powers that be.

As the article points out, there are a number of reports with the Government suggesting ways to improve the farm sector. It would be wise to revisit these reports and take action post haste.

It is time we improved the living conditions of the rural poor and this needs the sustained effort of all concerned.

The private sector has taken many innovative steps — e-choupal, to name just one — to reach out to the rural poor , the public sector needs to respond equally. Mere allocation of funds is not enough..

What is required is accountability of the funds allotted.
