A380 may touch down in India in May

Our Bureau

New Delhi March 27 The world's largest passenger aircraft, the double-decker Airbus A380 is to make its maiden public appearance in India in May.

The aircraft is expected to fly into Indian air space coinciding with the second anniversary of Kingfisher Airlines, the only Indian carrier to have ordered the aircraft.

"The aircraft could be in India on May 9, which is the anniversary of the airline. While nothing has been firmed up as yet, one thing is for sure - if the aircraft comes it will fly in the Airbus colours," the airline's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Vijay Mallya, told Business Line.

At present, the aircraft, which is expected to come to India, carries the registration MSN 007, and is touring different parts of the globe to show its capability.

The aircraft has just completed a 12-day route proving exercise with the German airline Lufthansa.

During the visit, the aircraft is to touch down at both Delhi and Mumbai, sources indicated.

Currently, consultations are going on with both the airports' operators to see whether it is possible to accommodate the aircraft at one of the parking bays rather than landing it at the end of the runway and transporting customers there to have a view of the new product.
