Land market

This is with reference to the editorial, "Create a land market'' (Business Line, March 29). The message to the Tatas and the Mittals to concentrate on the domestic market is in tune with the growing internal market for steel or cement. But the government should provide or at least ensure infrastructure facilities such as land and water.

The government can use any number of platforms to air the calls for price reductions or increase in production. But it should be supplemented by the political will to encourage the manufacturers to respond positively.

The entrepreneurs, labour force, the consumers and the public interest should be weighed in tandem, without the slightest bias. Recurrence of the Nandigram episodes may drive away entrepreneurs from the domestic sector to plan for foreign collaborations or acquisitions.

This does not in any way mean the farmers or poor people should be driven away by snatching their land in the guise of development. The government should take the lead in working out a via media rather than being partisan. The general welfare of the countrymen should assume paramount importance. We do not want mere preaching, but action of the highest order, keeping intact national interest and public welfare, with appeasement to none.
