TNT India introduces bio-fuel in its vehicles

Our Bureau

Bangalore March 29 In an experiment that could have a salutary impact on the cost competitiveness to the company, TNT India has followed its Dutch parent in introducing bio-fuel in its express transportation vehicles. A pilot has been started to study the gamut of supply chain management of the fuels' availability, its cost advantages and economics of operation in the next three months.

TNT India, which operates its services through 1,600 leased vehicles (this includes 100 vehicles of Speedage Express Cargo Services), was acquired last year by TNT.

Mr Abhik Mitra, Managing Director of TNT India Pvt Ltd, told Business Line that his company had taken the lead in the country in using bio-fuel and would take a decision on its scalability depending on the complete economics of cost, supply chain issues of fuels and their availability.

Mr Mitra said he was for a concerted effort by all the players in express and freight carrier industry to achieve standards and strategies for easier adoption of bio-fuel to fight the menace of global warming.

He, however, felt that the Government had a vital role to play in taking more effective initiatives for large-scale usage of bio-fuel.
