Our Bureau

Mumbai March 29 The first phase of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) would be completed by 2008, bringing 35 per cent additional capacity to Mumbai's suburban rail transport service.

The State Government has earmarked Rs 474 crore in the next fiscal for the project, said the Finance Minister, Mr Jayant Patil, on Thursday, during a discussion on the State budget in the Assembly.

MUTP aims to bring about improvement in the traffic and transportation situation in the Mumbai metropolitan region with assistance from the World Bank. This programme will upgrade suburban railway and local bus transport, add new roads, bridges, pedestrian subways and traffic management systems.

Mr Patil said that Rs 1,000 crore has also been allocated under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for the State. With this, work on the long pending middle Vaitarna project (for drinking water for the city) will soon start, he said.

The Union Government will contribute Rs 600 crore and the State Government Rs 400 crore under the mission. About 70 per cent of the funds would be spent on the Mumbai metropolitan region, Mr Patil said.
