Chennai March 30 Kerry Logistics (South East Asia) Pte Ltd today announced that it had picked up 51 per cent stake in a Chennai-based company Reliable Freight Forwarders Pvt Ltd, with a view to using the company as a launch pad for launching its logistics business in India. Kerry is a part of the Hong Kong-based Kouk group, owners of the `Shangri-La' hotel brand and the newspaper, South China Morning Post. The group has a large logistics business across the world, but essentially concentrated in China, where it has 121 offices, serves 1,100 cities, and operates 50 warehouses covering 16 million sq. ft. The new company, christened Kerry Reliable Logistics Pvt Ltd, was flagged off today by the Union Minister for IT and Communications, Mr Dayanidhi Maran. At a press conference later, Mr Robert K.W. Tan, Director, Kerry Logistics, (South East Asia), said Kerry Reliable Logisticswould initially focus on putting up distribution centres, warehouses and container freight stations. It would also run a fleet of `Kerry' trucks, at least a hundred in two years. The company does not keenly focus on running freight trains or operate berths at ports, but would be open to opportunities. Mr Tan did not want to give an idea of investments in these activities, but said that when the group started logistics business in Vietnam, it spent about $8 million initially. Indian operations are likely to be bigger, he said. The paid-up equity capital of Kerry Reliable Logistics is $1 million. Asked if the Indian partners would be able to bring in the required capital, Mr J. Antony Sekar, Managing Director, Kerry Reliable Logistics, answered in the affirmative. Mr Tan said Kerry would bring to India, apart from its logistics IT platforms and expertise, business from its global clientele of over 1,500 companies.
