Politics Industry & Economy - Industry Associations States - Tamil Nadu TN bandh will cripple industry: CII Our Bureau
Chennai March 30 The Confederation of Indian Industry Tamil Nadu State Council has urged the Government to reconsider its decision calling for a State-wide bandh on Saturday. A CII press release, which quoted the Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Council, Mr Gopal Srinivasan, said that the bandh would cripple industrial and commercial activity in the State with an estimated loss in Gross Domestic State Product of Rs 750 crore. The State Government has declared a public holiday on Saturday under the negotiable instruments Act. This follows the decision of the ruling DMK and its allies calling for a bandh protesting against the Supreme Court stay on the law providing for 27 per cent quota to Other Backward Classes in elite educational institutions. The CII urged the State Government to resolve the issue through legal and constitutional options. The CII release said Tamil Nadu is in the forefront of economic development and stalling the industrial and commercial activity will have an adverse effect on investors. CII is working with the State Government in education, skill development and social upliftment of the underprivileged sections of the society. The CII Task Force on affirmative action headed by, Dr J.J. Irani, has taken steps to support SC and ST candidates in skill development and employment. In Tamil Nadu, 978 of the 1,855 beneficiaries of skill development programmes belong to SCs and STs, according to the release.
