Mayur N. Shah

Plans three plants across auto centric regions

NEW PLANT: Mr Bharat Doshi, Chairman, Mahindra Intertrade Ltd, inaugurating the Blanking Line of the company's Nashik facility.

Nashik March 30 Mahindra Intertrade, part of the Mahindra group's trade and financial services sector, plans to offer value added steel supply services to the automotive industry.

It will provide services like supply of steel and stamping services (a manufacturing process) to the auto sector, said Mr Harsh Kumar, Managing Director of Mahindra Intertrade.

The company is currently offering services like `slitting' and `shearing' of steel through its facilities in Pune and introduced a blanking line facility in Nashik on Thursday.

Bulk inventory of steel and `just in time' delivery to relevant players in the auto industry will allow Mahindra Intertrade to rate the raw material at competitive prices.

Stamping is the new manufacturing process the company plans to offer through Mahindra Ugine Steel Company a sister concern with which Mahindra Intertrade is planning a joint venture.

The venture will offer a one-stop shop in the `metal working space' i.e. steel services industry for the domestic market.

Currently, the company has facilities at Pune, Nashik and Sharjah, and plans to add three more in Baroda, Delhi and Chennai respectively. The Delhi and Baroda facility would be built at an investment of Rs 60 crore. The Chennai plant will be the largest steel service centre in the country, though investment details were not disclosed.

The Nashik facility was recently established to cater to Mahindra & Mahindra's Scorpio plant, as well as the forthcoming Mahindra Renault plant for Logan. The plant is also strategically located to cater to global auto majors such as Volkswagen, General Motors and local players such as Tata Motors in the region.

The Chennai plant will cater to Hyundai, Ford, Toyota and Mahindra Renault-Nissan plant to be built by 2008-09. The Delhi plant is most likely to cater to auto players such as Honda and Maruti while the Baroda plant could service the General Motors plant.
