Plans licensing deals with Japan, US cos

LAUNCH PLANS: Mr Deepak Parekh, Chairman, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd, with Dr H.B. Joshipura, Managing Director, at the company's AGM in Mumbai on Friday. - Paul Noronha

Mumbai March 30 GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Ltd (GSK) is set to launch Carvedilol, a cardiovascular drug from Swiss drugmaker Roche, in the next two months, said Dr Hasit Joshipura, GSK's Managing Director.

Reiterating GSK's strategy to in-license drugs, Dr Joshipura told shareholders, on Friday, that GSK was in advanced discussions with companies to forge licensing deals. GSK would launch Carvedilol in a couple of months and was also in discussions with Japanese and American companies for similar deals, he said.

This was Dr Joshipura's first annual general meeting as head of GSK in India, having joined the company last year and taking over as its chief from January this year.

Vaccines in pipeline

GSK already has an agreement with Japanese firm Eisai for gastric ulcer drug Rabeprazole, Dr Joshipura said. The company also has a pipeline of vaccines slated for the country, including the Rotavirus vaccine and cervical cancer vaccine, he said.

The vaccines business in India was under some pressure due to competition and huge demand from other parts of the world, that gave rise to capacity problems, he added.

Regarding issues related to diabetes-drug Windia, he said, that the side effects reported in other markets were a small percentage.

The product is in the Indian market, he said and the company has informed the regulatory Drug Controller General of India.

On the recent tie-up with TCS, he said it was a data management deal, where GSK Plc's worldwide clinical trial data would be managed by TCS.

Meanwhile, GSK's Chairman, Mr Deepak S. Parekh, told shareholders that the company would invest Rs 18 crore in capacity expansion in the current year.
