Our Bureau

New Delhi March 30 ACC Cements, CMC, Thapar Group and Godrej Group will be sponsoring four Anti-retroviral Treatment (ART) centres.

In keeping with tradition, the corporate sector announced its social initiative on the eve of the launch phase three of the National AIDS Control Programme. "AIDS is already a national crisis and we had in place an AIDS in the Workplace initiative. However, for a long time we had been planning different HIV/AIDS initiatives to have a larger impact," said Mr Gautam Thapar, Chairman and MD, Ballarpur Industries Ltd.

"ACC, Ballarpur Industries and Godrej are the pioneers from corporate India who have come forward in the area of care and treatment. While ACC is the first to launch its ART centre, our plan is to get 10, 20, 50 and then 100 corporates involved in this area over the years," said Mr Tarun Das, Chief Mentor, Confederation of Indian Industries.

ACC's ART centre stands at Wadi outside the ACC Township in Karnataka. The company has also signed an agreement with the Christian Medical College, Vellore to work together in this area.

Meanwhile, the CII has recently developed a Smart Health Card, to track adherence to medical regimen. National AIDS Control Organisation has promised to help make this card available.
