New Projects Industry & Economy - Power States - Karnataka Nagarjuna's Udupi unit plans power supply from '09 A.J. Vinayak
Mangalore March 31 Nagarjuna Power Corporation Ltd which is setting up a 1,015-MW coal-based thermal power plant at Padubidri in Udupi district is planning to supply power to Karnataka by the end of 2009. Mr Praveer Sinha, Chief Operating Officer, told Business Line here that work is going on at the site in full pace. "Based on the progress, we hope that we should be in a position to supply power to the state by October or November of 2009. We should be able to give around 500 MW of power to the state from the first unit," he said. Another unit will be able to supply power four to five months after that. Not only the quality will be very good, but also the price will be very reasonable, he said. An agreement has been signed with the Punjab Government for sale of 10 per cent of the total production, Mr Sinha said. It is to be noted here that the company has begun earth works at the site. Asked about the rehabilitation of project-affected families, Mr Sinha said the company has taken up township construction for these families on 60 acres of land at Admar in the district.

"A township is coming up there with all modern facilities. We will be spending around Rs 10 crore at the rehabilitation site. As soon as the district administration allots site to the rehabilitated families, they can start constructing house there," he said. Stating that there are tremendous employment opportunities for local people at the project site, the COO said a majority of technical staff members, labourers and contractors are from the nearby areas.
GREEN BELT
Of the 420 acres of land at the project site, 30 per cent of the land will be earmarked for a green belt. "The company will plant two lakh trees at the site. We are planning to have our own nursery for this purpose," he added.
