Letters Bio-diesel trains
The article "Railways may earn carbon credits from bio-diesel project" (Business Line, March 23) is a shot in the arm for the Indian Railways as the use of biodiesel will reduce dependence on foreign oil, which, in turn, will lead to savings in valuable foreign exchange. Moreover, the use of jatropha oil-diesel mix will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases which are responsible for global warming, besides selling those carbon credits for revenue gains to big utility companies in the US and EU. The Jatropha plantation will also act a carbon sink. Hence, switching to alternative fuels such as biodiesel and gasohol provide multiple benefits of energy security, revenue gains and emission reductions.
