Direct tax collections up 40%

The Centre's net direct tax collections touched Rs 2,16,000 crore as on March 26 this fiscal, recording a 39.5 per cent increase over the collections in the corresponding period of the previous year.

The Government had pegged the revised estimates for direct tax collections for 2006-07 at Rs 2,29,272 crore. The Budget estimate for 2006-07 was Rs 2,10,684 crore.

Official sources said that personal income-tax collections till March 26 stood at about Rs 69,000 crore. This does not include the fringe benefit tax and the securities transactions tax that stood at about Rs 5,000 crore and Rs 4,500 crore, respectively. Corporation tax stood at about Rs 1,37,000 crore. The revised estimates for personal income-tax and corporation tax for 2006-07 have been pegged at Rs 82,510 crore and Rs 1,46,497 crore, respectively.
