Education States - Andhra Pradesh IIT to be set up at Kandi in Medak Our Bureau
Hyderabad April 1 The proposed IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) will be set up in Kandi in Medak district, with the high-powered committee finding it more suitable than Basara (Adilabad) and Lakdaram village (Medak). The Andhra Pradesh Government set up the committee to decide on the site, following widespread protests in favour of Basara as the IIT site. While the Opposition and people's organisations have been demanding that the IIT be set up at Basara, the Government maintained that lack of air connectivity was a major drawback and favoured the Medak site. The committee comprised Mr R. Natarajan (former Chairman of AICTE and Director of IIT-Madras), Prof N. Balakrishnan (Associate Director, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), and Prof Rajiv Sangal (Director of International Institute of Information Technology).
RESIDENTIAL CENTRES
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the Government would set up one of the three IIIT (International Institute of Information Technology) centres at Basara. "We have decided to set up three residential centres affiliated to the IIIT. One of these would come up at Basara, the other two would be set up at Nuziveedu (Krishna district) and Idupulapaya (Kadapa district). We will allot Rs 30 crore each initially," he said. Each of these IIT centres would have 300 seats. The Government would see to it that the students from rural areas get more seats, the Chief Minister added.
