New Projects Government - Politics States - Andhra Pradesh Reddy's son declines land offer from Govt Our Bureau
Hyderabad April 1 With the allocation of 486 acres of land by the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet to Raghuram Cement Company in Kadapa district snowballing into a major controversy, Mr Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, son of Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister, and a Director of the company, has written to the Government declining the offer. The Cabinet's decision last week to allot the land to Raghuram Cements at Rs 1 lakh an acre triggered a political furore, with the Opposition alleging that the Cabinet showed favouritism to the Chief Minister's son. The Cabinet, however, defended that the price fixed by the Chief Commissioner of Land Acquisition officials was six times the market rate in that area.
CM CONSULTED
When asked about the letter written by his son, Dr Rajasekhara Reddy said that his son did consult him before writing the letter. "I told him it is not a bad idea," he said. Dr Reddy, however, said that there was no plan to shelve the project. "They wanted to locate the factory and township there," he said. Criticising Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Telugu Desam President, he cited a number of instances where the former Government allotted land to several people and companies at throwaway prices.
