Mumbai city is likely to face load shedding of at least one hour in the near future. Currently, the power shortage is 400 mw and it is likely to increase to 550 mw in the coming days, said Mr Prasad Menon, Managing Director of Tata Power Co Ltd.
Tata Power, one of the oldest utility companies, supplies 1,797 MW of power to Mumbai city. Mr Menon said that to bridge the shortage, Tata Power has tied up with other generating companies across the country for the supply of 200 MW. The company is also negotiating for the supply of another 150 MW, he told newspersons.
The 200 MW is being wheeled in from distant States like Arunanchal Pradesh, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Orissa. Captive power plants are also being tapped for additional power.
Mr S.R. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director of Tata Power said that of the 400 MW power deficit, the Tata Power share is only about 50 MW but the company has offered to procure power on behalf of other distribution companies (Reliance Energy Ltd and BEST Undertaking) also for this summer.
Under the new electricity Act, the responsibility of supplying power to the consumer is with the distribution companies, he said.
Mr Ramakrishnan said that if power-saving measures are effectively managed, Mumbai could avoid load shedding. Procuring power is getting more and more difficult as the demand has increased across the country, except in West Bengal, Mr Ramakrishnan said.
