Singareni coal output touches record high

Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 2 The public sector Singareni Collieries Co Ltd (SCCL) has registered the highest production levels in its 118-year-old history by producing 37.70 million tonnes (mt) in 2006-07, recording a growth of 4.18 per cent over last year.

Of the 37.45 mt of coal despatched in the year, 72 per cent was despatched to the power (26.80 mt) sector. The APGenco power stations received 9.35 mt, the company said here in a press release.

Encouraged by the performance during 2006-07, the company has set a target of 40.5 mt of production for 2007-08. In order to meet the targets, it proposed to tap eight new mining projects, which could contribute about 16 lakh tonnes of coal.

Interestingly, the SCCL press release came in the wake of CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report on Saturday that found fault with it for "excess expenditure" during the year.
