Aircel Group loses top executives

Our Bureau

Chennai April 3 The Aircel Group has lost two of its top management executives who have put in their papers recently. When contacted by Business Line, company officials confirmed that the Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jagdish Kini; and Chief Financial Officer, Mr Ganapathy Subramanian, had resigned.

According to company officials, Aircel had not anticipated their resignations and it had been "caught unawares." Mr Kini said: "It was towards the end of the week that I made up my mind to leave."

Practical Problems

He resigned due to personal reasons and his inability to leave Bangalore — from where he headed the Aircel Group — was one of them.

The company is planning to move its headquarters to either New Delhi or Chennai. "There would be serious practical problems for me in relocating and the company had its own reasons to shift headquarters. So it was best we parted ways," he said.

However, Mr Kini hopes to continue his association with the `exciting' telecom industry. He may now join Enterprise 5c, a consulting firm that he started a while ago that is managed by his wife. As part of this firm, in the past, he has delivered strategy-consulting services to many telecom companies.

Mobile Network

Mr Subramanian could not be contacted. Aircel's corporate communication department in Chennai said it was releasing a company statement on the future course of action soon.

Malaysia's Maxis Communications Berhad owns 74 per cent stake in the Aircel Group and has earmarked investments of Rs 2,000 crore for 2007-08, most of which is likely to be used to expand its mobile network across India. At present, Aircel offers services in 9 telecom circles.
