`No respite from power cuts till end of rabi season'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad April 3 Due to continued mismatch between demand and supply in the State, the AP Transco Chairman and Managing Director, Ms Rachel Chatterjee, has ruled out the possibility of lifting power cuts in villages and towns till the rabi season ends.

Speaking at Consumers Day celebrations hosted at the Institution of Engineers, Ms Chatterjee said that inadequate gas supplies, which are the main reason behind such a demand-supply scenario, have rendered idle about 1500 MW of installed generation capacity.

The CMD said that the distribution companies should communicate the load relief schedule to the consumers and that the schedule should be adhered to without any changes.

She also said that the field staff should interact more often with consumers, explaining the reasons for load relief.

According to her, AP Transco and distribution companies have supplied up to 186 million units and met a demand of 8,650 MW and are procuring an additional six million units from other States.

The situation is likely to improve as the rabi season ends this month, she said.

The Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission, Mr K. Swaminathan, said that power sector reforms in the State were aimed at benefiting the consumers and making utilities answerable to them.

Mr K. Balram Reddy, former Chairman of the unbundled monolithic entity, the Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board, said that the State was a role model in reforms among 12 States that have restructured the power sector.
