South Eastern Rly freight earnings rise 23.29%

Kolkata April 3 South Eastern Railway (SER), a major freight loading zonal railway, has missed the 2006-07 originating revenue-earning freight traffic target of 100 million tonnes (mt) by a whisker. This is despite having achieved approximately 16 per cent growth in incremental loading, highest among all zonal railways, according to SER sources.

In 2006-07, SER handled originating revenue-earning freight traffic of 99.5 mt compared with 85.9 mt in 2005-06. The originating freight earning during the year too posted a growth of 23.29 per cent at Rs 4,906.5 crore (Rs 3,979.52 crore).

Item-wise break-up

Raw materials to steel plants at 26.52 mt (24.92 mt) posted a growth of 6.42 per cent; finished goods from steel plants at 8.84 mt (7.93 mt), showed 11.48 per cent rise; export ore increased by 30.89 per cent at 8.56 mt (6.54 mt); cement was up 22.47 per cent at 5.94 mt ( 4.84 mt); foodgrains rose 180 per cent to 0.14 mt (0.05 mt); fertiliser gained 5.08 per cent at 0.62 mt (0.59 mt); and other general cargoes registered 41.24 per cent rise at 28.53 mt (20.20 mt).

The throughput of coal, however, posted a decline of 5.65 per cent at 18.21 mt (19.3 mt).
