Steps soon for promoting coastal shipping

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 3 The Government would evaluate several measures that include providing further rebates in vessel and cargo-related charges, and dedicated berths at major ports to promote coastal shipping.

Presiding over a review meeting held here recently to discuss various issues pertaining to the growth of coastal shipping, the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, said that these measures should be discussed with all stakeholders to realise the potential of this cost-effective, fuel-efficient and environment-friendly mode of transport.

Rebates

According to an official statement, the various options to be examined include providing further rebate in the existing 40 per cent vessel-related and cargo-related charges at major ports, and scope of providing special dedicated berths at identified major ports for coastal vessels.

Concessions

Another option to be evaluated is allowing Indian-flag vessels to carry partial coastal cargo for concessional tariffs for the coastal sector.

Dedicated storage

Earmarking dedicated storage areas for coastal cargos at identified major ports so as to provide them a longer free period considering their long evacuation process would also be considered, the release added.
