FICCI move to cut use of mercury

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 3

The US Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a joint initiative with FICCI for reduction in use of mercury in Indian hospitals. The joint `mercury partnership' initiative would enable the Indian healthcare industry to reduce the use of mercury in clinical gadgets. This would be achieved through the use of new technologies developed by the US that use safer materials and are often more accurate than conventional instruments.

Mr Stephen L Johnson, Administrator, USEPA, said: "The proposed initiative will protect residents from the adverse effects of mercury and we will share our experience to see how hospitals here can benefit."
