3 estates get aid for infrastructure update

Our Bureau

Coimbatore April 4 The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned Rs 1.5 crore as matching grant for the upgradation of infrastructure facilities in three industrial estates — Kurichi near Coimbatore, Virudhunagar and at Kappalur near Madurai.

The project work, however, would commence after the share of the industrial units at 20 per cent of the project cost is collected. The total cost was estimated to be Rs 5.27 crore.

Mr Arun Ramanathan, Secretary, Small Industries Department, in an order, said that there were 75 industrial estates under the control of Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation Ltd (SIDCO). These estates were created during th 50s-70s and the infrastructure facilities there such as water supply, road, street light and storm water drain needed to be upgraded.

A provision of Rs 2 crore had already been made in the Budget for 2006-07 for the upgradation of some industrial estates. The Union Government has approved the upgradation of the existing industrial estates in Kurichi, Virudhunagar and Kappalur by reducing the project cost on the condition that the cost over and above should borne by the implementing agency/users.

The Centre had approved, at the rate of 40 per cent grant, Rs 60.85 lakh for Kurichi, Rs 13.98 lakh for Virudhunagar and Rs 75 lakh for Kappalur estate.

The State Government has now sanctioned a matching grant for each industrial estate.

The share of the allottees would come to Rs 30.44 lakh in Kurichi industrial estate, Rs 6.99 lakh in Virudhunagar and Rs 68 lakh in Kappalur.
