Tea States - Kerala 14 tea estates to reopen at Idukki Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram April 4 Fourteen tea plantations in Idukki district of Kerala will resume operations within the next three months. An understanding to this effect was reached at a meeting the Union Minister of State for Commerce, Mr Jairam Ramesh, and the State Labour Minister, Mr P.K. Gurudasan, had with representatives of the plantations here on Wednesday. The 14 plantations comprise nine belonging to RBT group, three to MMJ group and two to Peerumedu Tea Estates. The representatives of MMJ group agreed to resume operations at its plantations at the earliest. The trade union leaders of these plantations will hold further discussions on April 13.
FISCAL PROBLEMS
The representatives of Bonaccord estate at Vithura near here are reported to have apprised the ministers of the financial problems facing the plantation. The State and Union governments have announced several concessions to reopen the plantations. These include waiving of power charges and plantation and agricultural tax, waiver of penal interest on employees provident fund dues, investor subsidy for loans and financial assistance for replanting.
