Wheat Wheat output estimate raised to 73.7 m tonnes Our Bureau
New Delhi April 4 The Union Agriculture Ministry has reassessed this year's wheat crop at 73.70 million tonnes (mt), against the earlier 72.50 mt level. Briefing presspersons at the end of a two-day National Conference on Agriculture for kharif campaign 2007-08 here, the Agriculture Secretary, Dr P.K. Mishra, said the latest "third advance estimate" of 73.70 mt for 2006-07 1.20 mt more than the "second advance estimate" released on February 5 took into account the favourable weather following the February rains and drop in temperatures. "The State Governments have given us higher estimates, but we would prefer to be safe. The current projection (73.70 mt) seems realistic as of now," he added. The total foodgrain production during 2006-07 has also undergone upward revision from 209.17 mt to 211.78 mt. Rice output as per the "third advance estimate" is put at 91.79 mt (against the 90.13 mt of the "second advance estimate"), with these being 13.85 mt (13.56 mt) for maize, 8.27 mt (7.54 mt) for bajra and 7.63 mt (7.72 mt) for jowar. However, there has been a downward revision for pulses (from 14.52 mt to 14.10 mt) and oilseeds (from 23.62 mt to 23.26 mt). Production has been scaled down in the case of gram (from 6.16 mt to 5.97 mt), rapeseed-mustard (from 7.57 mt to 6.69 mt), while being raised for groundnut (from 4.41 mt to 4.98 mt).
