Root out corruption

Transparency Bribe Payer's Index 2006 ranks India the most corrupt nation in the world. India has now become the most corrupt exporting nation too.

This is a matter of serious concern at a time when Indian business is aggressively scouting to buy out foreign companies. The abysmal ranking suggests that we have few institutional checks and balances to ensure that business, whether at home or abroad, is conducted ethically. Files take forever to move, civil servants seem beyond accountability and the judicial system is dogged by delays. It is very difficult for anybody to thrive in such an environment.

Several international companies have complained that it is difficult to do business in India, as palms have to be greased at every level to get things moving. Corruption is not only confined to politicians or the government machinery but to the entire society at all levels.

An Indian who is honest to the core has become more an exception than the rule, though one would wish it were not so. The issues of governance and accountability have to be enforced at all levels to eliminate corruption and ensure rapid growth of the economy. The laws have to be implemented faster and stricter.

The President, Prime Minister and the various State chief ministers should realise the dangers of corruption and take stringent and effective action to root it out and ensure good governance if India is to achieve rapid and more equitable economic growth.
