Kolkata, April 5

For the first time, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of Steel Authority of India Ltd, surpassed the two million tonne-mark in hot metal production during the fiscal 2006-07. Hot metal production at the steel plant during the last fiscal touched 2.124 million tonnes (mt). This paved the way for an all-time high crude steel production of 1.992 mt and saleable steel production of 1.941 mt.

According to a press release issued by the company, capacity utilisation at the plant crossed 100 per cent for the first time with hot metal achieving 106 per cent, crude steel 105 per cent and saleable steel 116 per cent. On all these parameters, a growth of around 20 per cent was achieved compared with 2005-06. Production of niche products from finishing mills, such as plates, hot rolled coils and hot rolled plates registered best-ever production. Consequently, RSP despatched a record 1.935 mt of saleable steel, which was 20 per cent higher compared with despatches in 2005-06.
