Lorry strike hits Nilgiri tea units

Buyers facing year-end tight cash flow

Coonoor April 5 Tea factory owners in the Nilgiris, particularly in the small-scale sector called bought-leaf, are facing a cash crunch with choked outlets this week.

Teas worth around Rs 2.22 crore were withdrawn at the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) auctions last week with the domestic and export buyers reluctant to purchase huge volume after paying 4 per cent VAT (value added tax).

Movement of teas to Kochi auctions has been hit due to Kerala lorry strike. Additionally, the Easter holidays in Kerala have blocked the trade.
