Rs 40-cr expansion plan for Duty Free shop


`The Cochin Duty Free is the biggest area-wise among similar shops in Indian airports.'

Kochi April 5 Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) has targeted a turnover of Rs 122 crore during 2007-08 against Rs 110 crore achieved during 2006-07, its Managing Director, Mr S. Bharath, said on Thursday.

Addressing the media at the airport duty-free shop, after a lucky draw held as part of its four-month-long sales promotion programme, he said the turnover of the duty-free shop accounted for 25 per cent of CIAL's annual revenue. It is expected to increase to Rs 40 crore during 2007-08 as against Rs 32 crore earned during 2006-07.

According to Mr Bharath, The Cochin Duty Free was the biggest area-wise among similar shops in Indian airports. The transactions spent per passenger at the Cochin Duty Free rose to $41 during the last four months as against $38 per head till last year. This is ahigh figure compared to other airports in the country, he added.

EXPANSION PLANS

The company also plans to double the space for Duty Free shop at the airport by adding an extra 14,000 sq ft floor space, at a cost of Rs 40 crore, at the departure area by October-November this year. The existing shop at the arrival area measured 14,000 sq ft of floor area.

The four-month long sales promotion programme, sponsored by Diageo, the world's leading premium drinks business, since December 2006 had good response from the customers and CIAL will continue the efforts to attract more customers to the Duty Free shop, he added.

Mr P.P. Davis, an employee at G-6 construction company, Dubai, and hailing from Nadavarambu at Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, was selected at the lucky draw to win the promotional offer of a 2-bedroom flat, costing Rs 25 lakh, offered by the Duty Free shop.

Mr R. Krithivasan, Director, Travel Retail, Diageo, which sponsored the prize, and Mr Gopi Menon, General Manager, Alpha Kreol, which runs the Duty Free on behalf of CIAL, were present on the occasion.
