Coir Board aid for pith conversion into manure

25% of C-pom unit costs to be reimbursed

Using the technology developed by Coir Board, coir pith can be converted into enriched organic manure.

Kochi April 5 The Coir Board is implementing a programme for extending financial assistance for converting coir pith into organic manure to the units formed under different panchayats.

The quantum of financial assistance will be 25 per cent of the total cost of the unit subject to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh. Coir pith hitherto considered as a problematic waste has found use as a soil conditioner and plant nutrient source for agri/horti/floriculture after bioconversion.

Using the technology developed by the Board, coir pith can be converted into enriched organic manure (C-pom).

Popularisation

In Kerala, on an average around 1,80,000 tonnes of coir fibre is produced every year. This generates 3,60,000 tonnes of coir pith annually. The accumulation of coir pith in the producing centres causes environmental pollution.

Extraction of 1 kg of coir fibre generates 2 kg of coir pith and in India an estimated 7 lakh tonnes of coir pith is produced every year.

The Board is popularising the use of coir pith as manure in the domestic market. It has already taken up a collaborative research project with the Kerala Agricultural University to test the bio-efficacy of coir pith manure in various plants. The board has introduced a scheme for registration of manufacturers of C-pom and 15 manufacturers have already registered.

The board has also entered in to an agreement with Kerala Cooperative Marketing Federation for manufacture and supply of C-pom in required quantities for supply by the Rubber Marketing Federation to their member societies.
