The Union Health Ministry is considering a new National Treatment Protocol for management of snakebite. The protocol, prepared by the World Health Organisation (WHO), would replace the outdated treatment methods that are in vogue in India.
Dr Ian Simpson of WHO's Snakebite Treatment Group, who was here last week to take part in a workshop on snakebite management in Andhra Pradesh, said the Ministry was reviewing the protocol before making it a policy.

He said it was important to recommend the most effective first aid for victims to help them reach the nearest medical facility. Much of the first aid currently carried out was ineffective and dangerous. The protocol called for discarding traditional methods like cutting and suction, which were found to be dangerous.
The workshop, organised by Bayer Cropscience, introduced the kit to identify various snakes and the recommended first aid regimen to the participants. A WHO estimate put the annual bite rate at 2,50,000 and the mortality rate at 50,000, a Bayer press release said.
