Visakhapatnam, April 5

The I-T Department has collected Rs 1,511 crore during 2006-07 in the Visakhapatnam region comprising Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and the two Godavari districts. Mr A.K. Basu, the chief commissioner of income tax, said at a press meet here on Thursday that Rs 814 crore accounted for corporate tax and the rest was income tax. Last year (2005-06), Rs 903 crore was collected in the region. "We have achieved growth of 67 per cent in the region and this financial year we may cross the Rs 2,000-crore mark," he said. He attributed the rise in tax collections to the prosperity of Vizag-based PSUs in recent years.
