`Growth in IT, ITES sectors driving job market'

Our Bureau

NEW POINT: Mr S. Balaji, VP-HR, PlanetHR.in, flanked by Mr A. Prakash, Director, Madha Engineering College, and Dr. R. Venkatasamy, Principal, at a BL Club meeting.

Chennai April 6 The country's current economic growth rate of over 9 per cent and the increasing share of the IT and ITES industries in it hold out the promise of even better growth.

According to Mr S. Balaji, Vice-President-HR, PlanetHR.in, the student community could draw some cheer from these growth projections.

Given the nearly three-lakh jobs expected to be created annually for the next three to four years, there is less worry on the jobs placement front. Besides, with nearly 30 per cent of these recruitments expected to come from campuses, students should be optimistic about placements on graduating.

Mr Balaji was speaking to students of Madha Engineering College at a seminar titled `Turning Point' organised by the Business Line Club.

In fact, he said, the challenge before industries was to match supply with demand, which was multiplying exponentially.

There was an acute shortage of talent in the market. Whilst this presented a problem for industry, students should work to create talent and find the highest value for themselves.

Mr Balaji said industry's expectation of potential employees was that they had clear goals and the ability to communicate well. Besides, qualities such as high levels of energy, team spirit, achievement orientation, committed involvement and the ability to listen and learn, were also sought after.

The seminar was attended by students of the MCA and Computer Science Engineering departments of the college. Among others present on the occasion were Mr A. Prakash, Director; Dr R.Venkatasamy, Principal; and Dr M. Ramasamy, Dean.
