Kochi April 8 The International Pepper Community (IPC) will hold a second meeting to finalise the draft of Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) for Pepper in Jakarta from April 24-25. Experts from India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka who met in Jakarta in November 2006 had drafted the IPC GAP for pepper, IPC sources said. The first GAP meeting was held as per the recommendation made by the IPC session held in Kandy, Sri Lanka, in September 2006. The draft GAP was circulated to member countries for suggestions/comments. It is also available at the IPC Web site. IPC has so far received suggestions/comments from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the European Spice Association (ESA), and these would be discussed at the GAP meeting.
IPM for Pepper
Simultaneously a meeting to discuss the draft on IPC Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for Pepper will also be held in Jakarta from April 26-27, the IPC sources said. The IPM was discussed at the past two pepper-tech meetings. At the 30th pepper-tech meeting, a panel comprising experts from member countries and chaired by Dr Y.R. Sarma was formed. The panel stressed the importance of compiling all information available on pests and diseases of pepper. Panel members were requested to submit available research findings on foot rot and virus diseases of black pepper to the IPC Secretariat for documentation, in soft copies accompanied by good photographs by the end of April 2006. The panel also held a discussion subsequently at the 31st Pepper-tech meeting in Sri Lanka in September 2006. Based on the research findings, anIPM package for pepper was formulated. The next meeting would also discuss the draft of IPM package prepared by the panel, they added.
