`Basic research essential for country's growth'

Our Bureau

Mangalore April 8 It is essential to support basic science research for the sustainability of India's growth rate, according to Dr R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government.

Delivering a lecture on `Directed basic research', organised by Mangalore University here, he said that developed countries are successful in directing basic research.

The Steering Committee on Science and Technology for the 11th five-year plan has suggested measures to attract youth to basic research.

He said the international cooperation in basic research should be on `equal partnership' basis. Citing the example of nuclear research, he said India might need the help of the world community in the short-term. "Undoubtedly, the world will need our support in the long-term," he said. This is already happening in some of the areas of research.

Terming technology as power, he said that technology backed by science drives the development and security of the nation.

Dr Chidambaram said that basic research, mission-oriented research, industry-oriented research and rural technology delivery are essential for the development of the nation.
